Carley Adams

MDA

Carley Adams, MA, took her first basic mediation training at the age of 11 and, thirty years later, remains passionate about conflict resolution. She believes that people are doing their best with the tools they have. With the right questions, support, and a thoughtful process, coworkers can improve their skills and shift their understanding and behavior to resolve conflict and develop more constructive and positive relationships.

Carley’s professional path centered on 13 years as the manager of Dispute Resolution Center within local government. In this role, she mediated, facilitated, and oversaw hundreds of cases. She is particularly attuned to the challenges facing government agencies and union environments. She has also partnered with staff in non-profit organizations experiencing infighting and goal-setting. Carley has facilitated over 100 workshops on mediation, conflict resolution, communication, and restorative justice.

In one example, a management team contacted Carley to support staff who were being harassed by members of the public. They sought to help staff learn how to engage in difficult conversations and set clear boundaries, while maintaining professionalism in a public-facing workplace. There was also tension among co-workers about expectations of peer support during escalated situations. As a result of her work, participants expressed greater confidence in approaching future situations and a higher level of trust within their team.

Carley lives with her husband and two girls in Tigard, Oregon. She loves making art and might be found sewing elaborate costumes or creating whimsical crafts with her kids.
